Liev
Masculine · “lion”
Liev is a lion. Yiddish had Leib for the animal and used it as a name alongside the Hebrew Aryeh, which means the same thing, and Russian and the Slavic languages have Lev. Liev sits among them: short, hard at the end, and carrying an animal that Jewish naming has used for the tribe of Judah for a very long time.

The story of Liev
Ashkenazi Jewish naming often gave a person two names that meant the same thing, one Hebrew and one Yiddish: Aryeh Leib for the lion, Zev Wolf for the wolf, Tzvi Hirsch for the deer. The lion belongs to Judah in Jacob's blessing, which is why it recurs. Separately, Lev was an ordinary Russian name that Slavic Jewish families used too. Liev appears in American records mostly in the last few decades, and the spelling has been made visible by a well-known actor who carries it.

lion
Two closely related roads. Yiddish leyb, a lion, gives the traditional Ashkenazi name Leib, paired with the Hebrew Aryeh in the same person; Slavic lev, also a lion, gives Russian Lev and its relatives. Liev is a spelling that sits between the two, and which one a family means depends on where it came from.

The Marwan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Liev's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marwan climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marwan's path sketches the road Liev is walking now.
Liev sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single animal that any child can picture.
- Four letters and one syllable: fast to write and hard to mangle.
- It carries a genuine Ashkenazi naming tradition rather than a modern coinage.
- Liev, Lev and Leib are all in use and mean the same thing, so family records may differ.
- English readers may say it as the word live, which is a different sound entirely.
- A one-syllable name gives nothing to shorten and no change of register.
