The Spanish ending -ela was once a diminutive, borrowed from Latin and Italian -ella, and it once meant little. It does not any more. In Leonela, Marisela, Graciela and Daniela it is simply a name-forming ending, and nobody hearing it thinks of size. Suffixes lose their jobs and keep their posts.

Where it comes from

The story of Leonela

Latin had a productive diminutive in -ellus and -ella, which gave Italian -ello and -ella and Spanish -elo and -ela. In its early life it did what diminutives do: puella, a little girl, from puer. By the medieval period it was attaching to names as an affectionate marker, and by the modern period it had become inert, a syllable that makes a name feminine and Spanish and nothing more. The same fossilization happened to English -kin, which once meant small and now survives only in words like napkin and in surnames, and to -let, which is still alive in droplet but dead in tablet. Leonela peaks in the American data in 1985, brought in with Spanish-speaking families for whom the -ela ending was simply the ordinary way to make a name of this shape.

Not established

Two stems are possible and they are unrelated. Leon is from Greek and Latin leo, lion, and gives Leona, Leonel and Leonela straightforwardly. Leonor is the Spanish form of Eleanor, which is not from lion at all but probably from Occitan Alienor, of uncertain meaning. Leonela can be built on either, and no source settles which, so the name may or may not mean anything about lions depending on a family history that is rarely recorded.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is fully at home in Spanish and readable in English.
  • Leo and Nela are strong short forms in different registers.
  • The rhythm is even and easy to say once heard.
What to consider
  • English speakers compress the first two syllables.
  • Leonella with a double l is the Italian form and is often written by mistake.
  • Which of two unrelated stems it comes from is not recoverable.
