Ronica is Veronica with the first syllable gone, and Veronica has had a stranger afterlife than most names: it is attached to a flower, to a move in bullfighting, and to a relic. All three connections run back to the same story and none of them is obvious from the name.

Where it comes from

The story of Ronica

The cloth in the story is said to have been given to a man carrying a cross and to have kept the print of his face. Whatever the origin of that, the name attached to it went into the world in some unexpected places. Botanists gave it to a large genus of small blue flowers, the speedwells, apparently because the markings on the petals were thought to resemble the print on the cloth; the flowers are now the commonest thing in English gardens carrying the name. Bullfighting gave it to a pass in which the cape is held in front of the body with both hands and drawn slowly past the animal, because the posture is the one in which the cloth is held up in the paintings. A name can end up naming a weed and a technique without anybody deciding it should.

True image

The traditional reading joins Latin vera and Greek eikon, a true image, which describes the relic the name is attached to rather than any person. A competing account makes it a form of the Greek name Berenice, which would have nothing to do with images at all. The two explanations have been argued over for centuries and neither has closed the matter.

Fashion outlook

Ronica sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, easy to say and easy to spell, with a full formal name available behind it.
  • Roni and Nica are two very different short forms, one crisp and one soft.
  • It sounds like a complete name rather than a clipping, which most front-clippings do not.
What to consider
  • People who know Veronica will hear this as an abbreviation of it whatever is on the certificate.
  • Ronnica and Ronika exist for the same sound, so it will need spelling out.
  • The meaning belongs to the full name and is itself contested, so there is no short answer to give.
