The story of Leoncio
Leontius was a common late Roman and Byzantine name, carried by several saints and by a seventh-century emperor. Spanish took it as Leoncio, Italian as Leonzio, Portuguese as Leôncio — each language applying its own treatment to the Latin -tius ending, which gives ci in Spanish and zi in Italian. The name has stayed in ordinary use across Latin America and appears in American records with Mexican and Filipino migration, peaking in 1965.
Meaning
Latin and Greek "lion-like"
From Latin Leontius, itself from Greek leon, a lion, with an adjectival ending. Greek borrowed the word for lion from a Semitic source, probably the same root behind Hebrew layish. The chain from lion to Leontius to Leoncio is settled; the deeper Semitic origin is likely but not proven.

The Ollin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Leoncio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ollin climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ollin's path sketches the road Leoncio is walking now.
Leoncio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled and vivid, and shared with a large European family of names.
- Leo is available as a short form and is currently very fashionable.
- It has continuous use from late antiquity to the present.
- The ci is said two ways depending on the Spanish variety.
- English speakers will attempt lee-ON-see-oh with four syllables and the wrong stress.
- It reads as distinctly Spanish, which is either the point or the objection.
