Leandre

Leandre is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,659 boys against 15 girls since 1880.
Leandre reaches American records by two roads at once. It is the French Léandre, from the Greek Leandros, the young man who swam the Hellespont nightly to reach Hero and drowned in a storm. It is also, in the same decades, Le- plus Andre, built by the same American system that made Ledarius and Lemarcus.

The story of Leandre
Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite at Sestos and Leander a young man of Abydos; he swam the Hellespont each night guided by her lamp until a storm put it out and he drowned, and she threw herself from her tower. Musaeus told the story in late antiquity, Marlowe and Chapman retold it in English, and Byron swam the strait himself in 1810 to prove it possible. The name went into French as Léandre and Spanish as Leandro, both ordinary. Its American life is smaller and more recent: Leandre appears chiefly from the 1970s onward, and its early-1990s peak sits inside the years when Andre and its extended family were at their most productive.

Lion-man
Greek Leandros is a settled compound of leōn, lion, and anēr, andros, man, and French Léandre descends from it directly. Whether an American Leandre of the 1990s belongs to that line or to the Le- prefix family, where Andre is the base and Le- carries no meaning, cannot be determined from the record. Both are live and the two produce the same spelling.

The Audwin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Leandre's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Audwin climbed just as high around 1958, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Audwin's path sketches the road Leandre is walking now.
Leandre sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
