Laykin
Feminine
Laykin is given to both — 569 girls and 60 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Laykin ends in an element older than almost anything else in English naming. The -kin suffix is a medieval diminutive — it is what turned John into Jankin, which became Jack — and it survives now in a handful of words and a great many surnames. Laykin uses it without knowing it does, and its American peak is 2014.

Our story of Laykin
Diminutive suffixes are among the shortest-lived things in a language and among the most consequential while they last. The -kin ending was productive in English for roughly two centuries, from about 1250, and in that window it did something permanent: it made Jankin out of John, and Jankin wore down to Jack, which is now one of the most-used names in the English-speaking world and looks nothing like its parent. Then the suffix stopped being productive. It froze into surnames — Jenkins, Watkins, Perkins, Dickens — and into a few nursery words, and English speakers stopped being able to make new ones. Laykin is not a revival of that, because nothing in the modern name knows the suffix exists; the ending was reached by sound, from Lakin and Laken. But the shape it lands on is a real English word-forming element with seven hundred years of history, which is a more interesting fact about the name than any invented gloss would be.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No documented source for the whole. The -kin ending is genuine and very old: it entered English from Middle Dutch in the thirteenth century as a diminutive, produced Jankin, Watkin, Perkin and Simkin, and survives in the surnames Jenkins, Watkins and Hopkins and in the words napkin and lambkin. The Lay- front carries no lexical content. Lakin also exists as an English surname, so a route through that is possible but not demonstrated.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Camilia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Laykin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Camilia climbed just as high around 1990, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Camilia's path sketches the road Laykin is walking now.
Laykin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The pronunciation is obvious from the spelling with no competing reading.
- The ay digraph makes the vowel unmistakable, which Lakin does not.
- It is rare enough that a bearer is unlikely to share it.
- Laykin, Lakin and Laken all circulate, so records will drift.
- There is no documented meaning to give when asked.
- The ay spelling dates the name to the 2000-2020 window.
