Lavena
Feminine
Lavena is older than it looks. The La- prefix is now associated with a much later stretch of American naming, but it was already at work in the eighteen-hundreds, producing Lavina, Laverne, Lavonia and this one. What sits underneath is probably Lavinia, a name from the Aeneid belonging to the woman the whole second half of the poem is fought over.

The story of Lavena
Nineteenth-century American naming was more inventive than it is usually given credit for, and the La- prefix was one of its tools. Lavina, Lavena, Lavada, Laverna and Lavonia all appear in the records of that century, alongside the classical Lavinia they may or may not descend from. The prefix would become far more productive later, in a different community and a different century, which is why it now reads as modern. Seeing it in a name this old is a useful correction: the tradition is longer and broader than its most visible period.

Not established
Lavinia is the daughter of King Latinus in Virgil, promised to one man and married to Aeneas, and the city of Lavinium is named for her in the story — which means the poem presents the name as the source of the place rather than the reverse. What the name itself meant is not recovered; like Camilla and several others in the same text it may be pre-Latin. Whether Lavena descends from Lavinia or was built on La- plus an ending is genuinely open, and a hundred and forty years of American records will not settle it.

The trade-off
- It has a classical name available behind it if a longer or better-documented version is ever wanted.
- Vena works as a short form and sounds nothing like the whole.
- Three open syllables sit well against a short surname.
- The middle vowel can be read two ways and both are natural, so the name will be said wrong regularly.
- Lavina and Lavinia are both closer to the documented line, and both will be substituted.
- The name belongs to a much earlier American century and has not come back the way some of its neighbors have.
