Lauraine
Feminine · “the kingdom of Lothar”
Lauraine sits between two names that have been confusing each other for a century. Laura is a laurel wreath. Lorraine is a kingdom — the land of Lothar, a grandson of Charlemagne, carved out of his empire and named after him. This spelling has Laura's opening and Lorraine's ending, and it is not fully either.

The story of Lauraine
The kingdom was divided among Charlemagne's grandsons and the middle share went to Lothar, whose name stuck to the land long after his line ended; the French duchy and the modern region both descend from it. Lorraine became a girl's name in English in the nineteenth century, and it carried an association with France that intensified during the wars fought over that exact border. Laura arrived by a different route, through Italian poetry and the laurel. Lauraine is what happens when two well-used names sound close enough that families begin borrowing letters between them.

the kingdom of Lothar
Lorraine comes from Lotharingia, the middle strip of Charlemagne's empire assigned to his grandson Lothar and named for him; Lothar itself is a Germanic compound about a famous army. Laura is a separate word entirely, the Latin laurus, the laurel used to crown poets and victors. This spelling can be read as either, and families using it have meant both. The au points to Laura and the -aine points to Lorraine, which is exactly the ambiguity the spelling creates.

The Frederick test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lauraine's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Frederick climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Frederick's path sketches the road Lauraine is walking now.
Lauraine sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It has a genuine and specific history behind it: a Carolingian kingdom and the border region that outlasted it.
- Raine and Laurie are both available and they go in entirely different directions.
- The sound is completely familiar even where the spelling is not.
- Lorraine and Loraine are both far more common, and this spelling will be rewritten as one of them.
- The stress can fall at either end depending on which parent name a reader hears, so the name gets said two ways.
- It belongs audibly to the middle of the last century, which is either the appeal or the objection.
