The story of Larenzo
Saint Lawrence, a deacon of Rome martyred in 258, made Laurentius one of the great names of Latin Christendom, and Italian and Spanish turned it into Lorenzo. Lorenzo de' Medici ruled Florence at the height of the Renaissance. The name reached America by several roads: Italian and Spanish immigration, and separately through African American families who used Lorenzo steadily from the nineteenth century onward. Larenzo appears alongside Larenz and Lorenz in the mid-twentieth century, with its peak in the early 1970s — the same decade in which La- as an opening became one of the most productive elements in American naming.
Meaning
From Laurentum; laurelled
Lorenzo descends from Latin Laurentius, an inhabitant of Laurentum, a town in Latium whose own name is connected to laurus, the laurel or bay tree. The laurel reading is therefore indirect but genuine. The La- spelling of Larenzo is an American variation on the Italian and Spanish Lorenzo and carries no separate meaning of its own.

The Hymie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Larenzo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hymie climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hymie's path sketches the road Larenzo is walking now.
