The story of Langley
The place name became a surname in the ordinary medieval way, by identifying a person with where they came from, and the surname traveled to North America with English settlement. Its use as a first name for girls is American and recent, and it belongs to a specific pattern: the -ley place names of England have been mined steadily for American girls' names since the 1980s, in rough order of how soft they sound. Langley entered that queue late, reaching its best year in 2015. Its most prominent modern associations, a Virginia town and an air force base, are both consequences of the surname rather than of the meadow.
Meaning
long meadow, or long woodland clearing
From Old English lang plus leah. The element leah originally meant a clearing in forest and only later drifted toward meadow or pasture, so the older sense is a strip of ground opened up in woodland. It is the same second element as in Ashley, Bradley, Hadley, Shelley and Presley.

The Aryan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Langley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aryan climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aryan's path sketches the road Langley is walking now.
Langley sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A genuine English place and surname rather than a modern invention, with a documented meaning.
- One obvious spelling, which is rare in the -ley family.
- Works as easily on a boy, if that matters to the family.
- For many American adults, Langley means the CIA before it means anything else.
- It sits close to Langston, Landry and Bentley, all of which will be substituted for it by mistake.
