Lakshmi
Feminine · “good fortune”
Lakshmi first meant a mark. In the oldest Sanskrit the word is a sign or token, neutral in itself, and it only became fortune by way of the auspicious sign: the good mark, then the good, then the goddess who holds it. You can watch a word narrow across three thousand years.

The story of Lakshmi
Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, fortune and beauty, the consort of Vishnu, and one of the most widely worshipped deities in Hinduism; she is the figure honored at Diwali, and her image standing on a lotus is among the most reproduced in the world. Naming a daughter for her is ordinary across India, and the name appears in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi families with a range of regional spellings and compounds, Mahalakshmi and Rajalakshmi among them. In United States records it belongs to Indian migration of the last sixty years and reached its best year in 2011, later than most Indian names of its generation.
Meaning
good fortune, prosperity; originally a mark or sign
Sanskrit lakshmi, from laksha, a mark, sign or target, the same root behind lakshana, a characteristic or auspicious bodily sign. In the earliest texts lakshmi can be a sign of either kind, and the phrase for the bad sort is specified separately; over time the word settled on the favorable reading alone, and then on the goddess of it.

Pronouncing Lakshmi
LUCK-shmee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The ksh is a single Sanskrit consonant rather than three sounds in a row, which is what makes it difficult for English speakers; Laxmi is the spelling that admits this.

The Teshia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lakshmi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Teshia climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Teshia's path sketches the road Lakshmi is walking now.
Lakshmi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- The ksh cluster is genuinely difficult for English speakers and will be simplified.
- Laxmi is the common Indian alternative spelling and both are used in the same families.
- Some families consider a deity's name a serious commitment rather than a decorative one.
