Where it comes from

The story of Kymber

Diamonds were found in the northern Cape in 1871 and the mining camp was named Kimberley for the colonial secretary of the day. The siege of the town during the South African War made the name familiar across the English-speaking world, and it began being given to daughters shortly afterward, becoming enormously popular in the United States in the nineteen-sixties and seventies. Kimber and Kymber are clippings from the last two decades.

Meaning

Cyneburg's wood or clearing

The English place name Kimberley is generally read as the leah, a clearing, belonging to a woman named Cyneburg, whose own name joins Old English cyne, royal, to burh, a fortress. The South African town took the name from a British earl who took it from the English village.

Kymber sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2014, with 75 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kymber went to 25 girls in 2025, but Kimber is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 303, which makes it the 668th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,431 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,305 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 64,291 for Kymber itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kim is available as a short form and is instantly familiar everywhere.
  • The meaning traces to a named Anglo-Saxon woman, which is a rare and specific thing.
  • Two syllables with the stress in front sit well against most surnames.
What to consider
  • Kimber is the commoner spelling and this one will be corrected often.
  • Kimberly is very heavily used for an older generation, which colors how the short form reads.
  • The town it comes from has a complicated colonial and mining history.
