The story of Alexes
Anna Komnene was the eldest child of a Byzantine emperor, was educated in philosophy, mathematics and medicine, ran a hospital, and expected to rule. When her father died the throne went to her brother; she was implicated in a conspiracy to take it, the plot failed, and she spent the rest of her life in a monastery in Constantinople. There she wrote a long history of her father's reign — fifteen books, in deliberately archaic Greek, covering the Norman wars, the court, the theology and the arrival of the First Crusade, which she watched from the inside and describes with a mixture of alarm and contempt. It is the only narrative history from the Byzantine world written by a woman, one of the very few from anywhere in medieval Europe, and it is a principal source for events that western historians describe from the other side.
Meaning
defender; one who wards off
From a Greek verb meaning to ward off or defend, the same element that opens Alexander. The name was used for men in Greek and Russian for centuries before American usage gave it to daughters, which is why the record holds this spelling for both.

Alexes sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
