Where it comes from

The story of Konstantin

Constantine's decisions reshaped Europe, and his name went with the church he legalized: into Greek as Konstantinos, into the Slavic languages as Konstantin, into German with the same spelling. In Greece and Russia it has been among the most-given names for centuries, and the man who brought writing to the Slavs was born Konstantin before he took the name Cyril. It came to American records with Russian, Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian and German families, and the spelling with a k marks it as arriving from that direction rather than through English.

Meaning

constant, steadfast

Latin Constantinus, from constans, standing firm, steady, unchanging. The same root gives the English words constant and constancy.

Konstantin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2015, with 44 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

About 1 boy in 61,003 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 85,404 for Konstantin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries one of the best-documented histories of any name in Europe.
  • It offers short forms from several languages, Kostya and Kostas among them.
  • It is at home in Russian, Greek, German, Bulgarian and Serbian households alike.
What to consider
  • Three syllables and eleven letters is long for American forms.
  • The stress moves between languages, so the name is said two ways in one life.
  • Constantine is the English spelling and will be substituted by people writing quickly.
