The story of Kinzie
Clan Mackenzie held Kintail and much of Ross, and the surname went out with Scottish emigration to Canada, the United States and New Zealand. It became a girls' first name in North America in the nineteen-eighties and rose very fast; taking off the Mac followed, producing Kenzie and Kinzie as names in their own right. The z in the spelling is a genuine historical curiosity, since it never represented a z sound in the Gaelic at all.
Meaning
son of Coinneach, the comely one
Scottish Gaelic Mac Coinnich, from the personal name Coinneach, generally read as handsome, comely or fair. The English spelling with a z is an accident: the letter stands for an old Scots character that was said as a y, which is why the name looks nothing like the Gaelic.
