English uses h to modify the letter before it: th, sh, ch, ph, gh, wh. Kh is the one slot that never filled. English has no native kh sound, so the digraph stayed empty and available, which is why transliterators from Arabic, Russian and Hebrew could take it, and why American naming can use it as pure decoration.

Where it comes from

Our story of Khyla

Our reading is that kh occupies a genuinely empty slot in English spelling and that this is why it has been so useful. English has a set of consonant-plus-h digraphs, each standing for a single sound: th for two sounds, sh for one, ch for one, ph for f, gh for a sound the language lost, wh for another it is losing. Kh belongs to the set by shape and to none of it by sound, because English has no velar fricative and has not had one since gh went silent. That left the digraph unoccupied and therefore available. Transliterators took it for the Arabic kha, the Russian kh, the Hebrew chet and the Greek chi in some systems. American naming then took it from them, as a mark of foreignness that costs nothing, since an English speaker reading Khyla simply says a k and moves on.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Khyla is a respelling of Kyla, which is a modern feminine of Kyle, from Scottish Gaelic caol, narrow, or an independent formation. The kh digraph represents a sound English does not have, made at the back of the mouth like the ch of Scottish loch, and is used here decoratively rather than phonetically. It peaks in 2011.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Khyla went to 11 girls in 2025, but Kyla, Kylah and Kilah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 676, which makes it the 423rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,437 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,378 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Khyla itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
