The kh at the front belongs to a different alphabet. It is the standard way of writing an Arabic and Persian sound English does not have — the one in Khadija and Khan — and Greek chloe has no such sound in it. The spelling borrows a convention from a language the name has never been near.

Where it comes from

The story of Khloie

Chloe as a title of Demeter names her at a particular moment: the goddess of grain in the phase when the crop is just showing, before anything can be relied on. The shrine was near the entrance to the Acropolis and the sacrifices there were made in early spring. The word then turns up as an ordinary woman's name in the first century, which is how it entered Christian use. The kh in this modern spelling is a separate matter. Transliterators use kh for a throat sound found in Arabic, Persian, Russian and Hebrew, and English readers have learned to read it as a marker of foreignness rather than of a particular sound — which is what it is doing here.

Meaning

the first green shoot

Greek chloe is the pale green of new growth — the color of a shoot just out of the ground rather than of a mature leaf. It was an epithet of Demeter, who had a shrine as Demeter Chloe on the slope of the Athenian Acropolis, and it appears as a woman's name in Paul's letter to Corinth.

Khloie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 111 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Khloie went to 7 girls in 2025, but Chloie and Kloie are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 23, which makes it the 937th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,995 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 69,881 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Khloie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning that names something specific and seasonal.
  • Two syllables that everyone can say correctly on first sight.
  • The name behind it has been in continuous use since the first century.
What to consider
  • Chloe is overwhelmingly the standard spelling and this one will be corrected for life.
  • The kh belongs to a transliteration system this name has nothing to do with.
  • Khloe, Kloe and Chloie are all in use, so the spelling will be given letter by letter.
