English inherited c from Latin with one sound and then borrowed enough French to give it a second, so that cat and city, coal and cell, use the same letter for different things, and no reader can tell from the letter alone. K is unambiguous: it is always the hard sound, in every position, in every word. That is why American respellers reach for it constantly, converting Caitlin to Kaitlyn, Christopher to Kristopher, Caleb to Kaleb, Chloe to Kloie and Cameron to Kameron. The change carries no meaning and does not alter the sound; it removes an ambiguity that English speakers have lived with for a thousand years, and in doing so it hides the Greek ch that told a reader where the name came from.
