The story of Chloie
The naming of enslaved people was frequently done by owners, and one visible pattern is the use of classical names: Chloe, Phyllis, Dido, Venus, Cato, Pompey, Caesar and Scipio appear throughout southern inventories and probate records, often ironically, on people whose own names were not recorded. Chloe was among the most frequently imposed, partly because it already existed as a pastoral name in English literature. What happened afterwards is not simple: some families kept such names and passed them down, and some did not, and the 1881 figures, at the very beginning of national data, catch the tail of that history rather than its beginning. The Greek word itself means the first green of a growing plant.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
