Keyona
Feminine
Iona is named by a copying error. The island Columba founded his monastery on was called Ioua; a medieval scribe copying Adomnan's Life of Columba wrote an n for the u, and the mistake was repeated until it became the name. One slip of a pen renamed the most famous island in Scottish Christianity.

Our story of Keyona
Our reading is that the Iona story is worth telling alongside this name because it shows how fragile a place name can be. Adomnan, writing his Life of Columba around the year 700, calls the island Ioua insula. In the manuscript tradition the u was at some point read as an n, producing Iona, and because the copies with the error were the ones that circulated, the wrong form won. It was helped by the fact that Iona looks like a Hebrew name, Jonah, meaning a dove, which fitted Columba, whose own name means dove in Latin. So an error was reinforced by a coincidence that made it look meaningful. The island has been Iona ever since, and Ioua's own meaning is not recoverable. A name can be entirely wrong and entirely permanent, and there is no mechanism for correcting it.

Keyona is an American formation joining the Ke- prefix to an -ona ending. It resembles Iona, the Scottish island, whose name is a scribal alteration of Ioua, itself of uncertain meaning. Neither element of Keyona carries an inherited meaning and the resemblance is coincidental. It peaks in 1994.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
