Kerby is a village, and there are dozens of it. The -by ending is Old Norse for a farmstead or settlement, and the map of England is dotted with names that carry it — Derby, Whitby, Grimsby, Rugby — every one of them marking ground the Danes settled. Kirkby is the one with a church in it, and the surname came from whichever of those villages a family left.

The story of Kerby
The Danish and Norwegian settlement of northern and eastern England in the ninth and tenth centuries left its clearest trace in place names, and the -by ending is the most reliable marker of it: draw a line around the villages that end in -by and the map of the Danelaw appears. Families that moved away from a place called Kirkby took the name with them, and it became a surname. American use as a first name follows the ordinary route for a pleasant-sounding English surname, and the e-spelling is a written variation rather than a different name — it does not change the sound, only the look.
Meaning
the village with the church
From Old Norse kirkja, a church, and býr, a farmstead or village. The compound gave several dozen English place names, which wore down in speech to Kirby and, less often, Kerby. The word kirk survives on its own in Scots and northern English.

The Claudell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kerby's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Claudell climbed just as high around 1940, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Claudell's path sketches the road Kerby is walking now.
Kerby sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It has a real place behind it, and a documented one — the Norse settlements are among the best-mapped events in English history.
- Two syllables, easy to say, and friendly on a small child without being childish.
- It works for a child of either sex, as most surname-names do.
- Kirby is the far commoner spelling and will be written instead, constantly.
- It is also a well-known vacuum cleaner brand and a video game character, and both will come up.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy, though the name itself carries no signal either way.
