Where it comes from

The story of Claudell

When the emperor Claudius came to Britain for the final stage of the Roman conquest, he brought war elephants with him, a sight the island had never seen. In French the name became Claude and was given to both sexes: Claude of France, queen to Francis I, gave her name to the greengage plum, which the French still call reine-claude, Queen Claude. In America, Claude was mostly a man's name, and Claudell extended it with an ending that reached both boys and girls, as Claude itself does in France.

Meaningscholars disagree

Claude with an -ell ending; Claude from the Roman Claudius

Claude comes from the Roman family name Claudius, which ancient writers linked to claudus, lame; that link is traditional rather than proven. The -ell ending is an American addition.

Fashion outlook

Claudell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a long European history through Claude.
  • Claude and Dell give two ready short forms.
  • It works for a boy or a girl, as Claude does in French.
What to consider
  • It will be written Claudel, the surname of the French poet and sculptor, or Claudelle.
  • It leans to boys in the record; a girl named Claudell may be taken for a boy on paper.
