Where it comes from

Our story of Kensleigh

Ours, offered as ours. Kensington is one of those English place names that has completely lost its person: it means the farmstead of the people of a man called Cynesige, who is otherwise unrecorded and about whom nothing whatever is known except that a large and expensive part of London carries his name. Kensleigh takes the front of it and adds the -leigh ending. Cynesige is still in there, entirely anonymous.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is established for the compound. The Kens- opening comes from Kensington or from Kenley, both English place names built on Old English personal names. The -leigh ending is Old English leah, a clearing, used here as a suffix.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ken and Leigh are both complete names in their own right.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
  • A real English place-name element stands at the front of it.
What to consider
  • Kensleigh, Kensley and Kenzleigh are all in use and none is dominant.
  • Nine letters for two syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
  • There is no documented meaning for the compound.
