The z in Mackenzie is a mistake. Scots once wrote a letter called yogh that looked like a tailed z, and when printers ran out of it they set a z instead, which is why Mackenzie, Menzies and Dalziel are all said with sounds their spellings do not contain.

Where it comes from

The story of Kensi

Middle Scots used the letter yogh for a sound like the y in yes. It was written with a descender and looked enough like a z that Continental printing types, which had no yogh, substituted the z, and the spelling stuck while the sound did not. Scots readers went on saying the old sound for centuries, which is why the surname Menzies is properly said MING-iss and Dalziel is DEE-ell. Mackenzie belongs to the same set: the Gaelic is Mac Coinnich, and the older anglicized pronunciation was closer to Mackenny. The z we now say is a reading of a printer's substitute. Inside the name is Coinneach, the same name as Kenneth, so a girl called Kensi carries a clipped Highland patronymic and a spelling accident from the age of movable type.

Meaning

Scottish Gaelic Coinneach, comely or handsome

Kensi is a clipped American form of Mackenzie, from Gaelic Mac Coinnich, son of Coinneach. Coinneach is the Gaelic name anglicized as Kenneth, generally read as comely or handsome. The clipped spelling has no separate history; its peak is 2014.

Kensi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2014, with 90 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables and five letters, the shortest form of a long name.
  • Kenneth sits inside it, which pairs well in a family.
  • It works as a full name without needing Mackenzie behind it.
What to consider
  • The s is pronounced as a z, which the spelling does not signal.
  • Kenzie is the more common spelling of the clip.
  • The 2014 peak dates it to the last decade.
