The Morte d'Arthur is the source for almost every English retelling of the Arthurian stories since, and its author says at the end that he is a knight prisoner and asks for prayers for his deliverance. Scholars have been arguing for a century about which Malory he was. The leading candidate was a Warwickshire knight and member of parliament repeatedly accused of ambush, extortion, theft and worse, who spent much of the last twenty years of his life in prison and wrote, from there, the most sustained account of chivalry in English. If that is the man, then the book about honor was composed by somebody with a long charge sheet, which is either a problem or the most interesting thing about it.
