Where it comes from

The story of Kennadi

Cennétig was the father of Brian Boru, the high king who broke Viking power in Ireland, and the family took his name — Ó Cinnéide, the O'Kennedys of Munster. Irish descriptive bynames were unsentimental: names meaning crooked, dark, small and bald all became major surnames. American use of Kennedy as a girl's name follows the political family, and Kennadi is a recent respelling.

Meaningscholars disagree

helmeted or misshapen head

From Irish ceann, a head, and éidigh, ugly or armored; the sources split between a helmet and a deformity. Irish bynames were often blunt about appearance, so the unflattering reading is entirely plausible.

Kennadi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 137 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kennadi went to 30 girls in 2025, but Kenadi and Kennady are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 73, which makes it the 887th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,659 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,017 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 53,576 for Kennadi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
