Kenlie
Feminine · “Gaelic Cinaed”
Kenneth is two different Gaelic names that English flattened into one. Irish Cinaed means born of fire; Scottish Coinneach means handsome or comely. They are unrelated, they were kept apart in both languages, and English anglicized both as Kenneth because it could not hear the difference.

The story of Kenlie
Anglicization collapsed a great many Gaelic distinctions and this is one of the cleaner examples. Cinaed mac Ailpin, the ninth-century king traditionally credited with uniting the Picts and the Scots, is known in English as Kenneth MacAlpin, and his name is the Irish one. Coinneach is a separate Scottish name entirely, carried by the Mackenzies, whose surname is Mac Coinnich, son of Coinneach. English clerks writing Gaelic names down chose the nearest familiar-looking form and used it for both, and after a few generations the underlying names had merged in English usage while remaining distinct in Gaelic. The same thing happened to Eoghan and Eoin, both anglicized as Owen or John, and to Diarmaid and Dermot. Reversing the process is impossible: an English Kenneth cannot know which name his family carried.

Gaelic Cinaed, born of fire, or Coinneach, handsome
Kenneth anglicizes two distinct Gaelic names: the Irish Cinaed, generally read as born of fire, and the Scottish Coinneach, from a root meaning comely or handsome. The two are unrelated and were both rendered Kenneth in English. Kenlie joins the Ken stem to the -lie ending, which spells the same sound as -ly, -lee and -leigh. It peaks in 2010.
