Latin had two endings that look alike in modern names and did completely different jobs. The -ius of Julius and Antonius is a family-name ending. The -arius of notarius and actuarius is an occupational suffix — the ancestor of English -er. Kendarius borrows the second one, which is the job suffix.

Where it comes from

Our story of Kendarius

The classical endings borrowed by modern American naming were never sorted, and that is worth setting out because it explains why names like Kendarius, Jamarius and Demetrius look related and are not. Latin -ius was a gentilicial ending, marking a Roman clan: Julius, Claudius, Antonius. Latin -arius was occupational, marking a trade: a notarius wrote notes, a sicarius carried a dagger, a librarius copied books. The two are different suffixes attached to different kinds of stem, and Latin speakers would never have confused them. Modern naming took the sound rather than the grammar, which is a completely ordinary thing to do — English borrowed -athon from marathon the same way, having mis-cut a place name. The result here is a name whose ending once meant is employed at and now means nothing at all.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No inherited meaning. Ken- is a created prefix, most likely from Kendrick or Kenneth. The Latin -arius formed nouns for people defined by what they handled: notarius from nota, a note; sicarius from sica, a dagger; librarius from liber, a book. It passed through French as -ier and into English as -er and -ary, giving notary, granary and library. None of that transfers to Kendarius, which has no documented reading.

Four syllables, stress on the second. The -ius ending is said as two syllables, ee-us, not as a single ee-oos; that is the English convention for Latin endings.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ken and Kenny are immediate, long-established short forms.
  • Darius sits inside it as an ancient name in its own right.
  • The classical-sounding ending gives it formal weight.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long, and the name will be shortened in daily use.
  • The Latin ending is borrowed for its sound and carries no meaning.
  • The sound dates a bearer to the 1990s.
