Where it comes from

The story of Keilly

The Irish presence in Latin America is larger than most people expect. Irish soldiers served in the Spanish armies from the seventeenth century, Irish merchants settled in the ports, and nineteenth-century emigration took tens of thousands to Argentina in particular, where the community was substantial enough to support its own newspapers. Bernardo O'Higgins, one of the liberators of Chile, was the son of an Irishman from Sligo. Che Guevara's full surname was Guevara Lynch, the Lynch being Irish by way of Galway. The surnames that came with them were written in Spanish, which produced spellings like Keilly, Obrien and Macnamara, and those spellings then traveled back north with later migration. What looks like an American respelling is often a Spanish one with its own history.

Irish ceallach, meaning disputed

From the Irish O Ceallaigh, descendant of Ceallach, a personal name variously read as bright-headed, strife, or frequenting churches; none of the three commands agreement. Keilly is a Spanish-influenced respelling of Kelly, using ei and a doubled l. It peaks in the American data in 2011, chiefly among Spanish-speaking families.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keilly went to 11 girls in 2025, but Keily, Keyli and Keili are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 282, which makes it the 685th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,175 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,700 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Keilly itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
