Kyle and Keeley contain the same word. Gaelic caol means narrow or slender, and it names both a strait of water and a slender person. Two names that look and sound entirely unrelated in English are built on one adjective, and the connection is invisible because Irish and Scottish spellings diverged.

Where it comes from

The story of Keelie

Irish and Scottish Gaelic separated slowly and their spelling conventions diverged in the early modern period, which is why the same word can be unrecognizable across the two. Caol is the adjective in both; Scotland used it as a noun for a narrow sea channel, giving the Kyles of Bute and the Kyle of Lochalsh, and the word became a surname and then a first name in that form. Ireland used it in personal names and surnames, where it was subject to the full Irish spelling system, with its slender and broad consonant markings and its lenition, producing forms like O Caolaidhe that no English reader can decode. Anglicization then took the two along different routes: the Scottish noun kept its shape and the Irish surname was rewritten phonetically. The result is Kyle and Keeley, which share a root and nothing else.

Meaningscholars disagree

Irish caol, slender

Keeley anglicizes the Irish surname O Caolaidhe, descendant of Caoladhe, built on caol, slender or narrow. The same caol gives Kyle, from the Scottish Gaelic noun for a strait. An alternative derivation from caol and fiadh, a slender deer, is also proposed. Keelie is a modern American spelling. It peaks in 2007.

Keelie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 75 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keelie went to 11 girls in 2025, but Kellie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 30, which makes it the 930th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,930 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 53,576 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Keelie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
