Keane
Masculine · “descendant of Cathan”
The Irish O Cathain has been anglicized as Keane, Kane, Cain and O'Kane, and one of those spellings is the name of the first murderer in the Bible. Nobody chose that; English clerks writing Irish names by ear did it for the families concerned.

The story of Keane
Irish names were written down by English-speaking officials for centuries, and the results depended entirely on the clerk: one family became Keane, another Kane, another Cain, and a fourth kept the O. Because the collision with the biblical Cain carried an obvious stigma, some families moved deliberately to Kane or Keane in the nineteenth century, which is one of the few documented cases of a naming change made to escape an accident of spelling. Keane became an American given name in the twentieth century, and its best year in United States records is 1996. The English adjective keen is a further and separate coincidence.
Meaning
descendant of Cathan, from a word meaning battle
Irish O Cathain, from Cathan, a diminutive of cath, a battle. The same cath appears in Cathal and in Cathair. The English spellings Kane and Cain collide with the biblical Cain, Hebrew Qayin, which is an entirely unrelated name; the collision is a product of anglicization and not of any connection.

The Uri test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Keane's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Uri climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Uri's path sketches the road Keane is walking now.
Keane sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
