The story of Uri
Exodus names Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur as the craftsman filled with skill to build the tabernacle and everything in it — one of the very few places in the Hebrew scriptures where artistic ability is described as a divine gift in its own right. That passage has been read for centuries as the charter for religious art in Judaism. Uri became an ordinary modern Hebrew name and is very common in Israel today, often given without any particular reference to the passage.
Meaning
my light, my flame
Hebrew ur means light or flame, and Uri is that word with the first-person possessive ending. The reading is documented and undisputed. The same element opens Uriel, 'God is my light', and Uriah, 'the Lord is my light', so Uri is the shortest member of a small and coherent family.

The Janes test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Uri's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Janes climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Janes's path sketches the road Uri is walking now.
Uri sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- An exact and vivid meaning in three letters, which very few names manage.
- Uriel and Uriah both stand beside it as longer forms in the same family.
- Very common in Israel, so it is an established name rather than a revival.
- English speakers add a y at the front until corrected.
- It is very short and may read as a nickname on official documents.
- It sits close to the English word 'your' when said quickly by an unfamiliar speaker.
