Kealani
Feminine
In Hawaiian, sky and chief are the same word. Lani means the heavens and it means a high chief, because rank was understood as heavenly — so Kealani, Kalani and Leilani all carry a word that points upward in both senses at once.

The story of Kealani
Hawaiian social structure placed the aliʻi, the chiefly class, in a genealogical line traced to the gods, and the language reflects it throughout: separate vocabulary for chiefly bodies and actions, and the element lani attached to names and titles. The sky sense and the rank sense are one word because the claim was that they were one thing. Missionary-era and modern naming continued using the element freely, and it is among the most common in Hawaiian names. Kealani is a modern formation on the pattern; the American figures peak in 2000, on the mainland as well as in Hawaii.
Meaning
Hawaiian "the heaven" or "the chief"
From ke, the definite article used before words beginning with k, e, a or o, plus lani, sky, heaven, or a high chief. The double sense is not a metaphor added later: Hawaiian rank vocabulary treats the highest chiefs as of the heavens, and titles such as aliʻi nui and the honorific lani are used together. Leilani is lei plus lani, a heavenly garland or a royal child.

The Cherylynn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kealani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cherylynn climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cherylynn's path sketches the road Kealani is walking now.
Kealani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled and carries real cultural weight.
- Lani is an immediate short form and a name of its own.
- The vowels are pure and survive being said by non-native speakers.
- Mainland speakers compress the vowels, which Hawaiian never does.
- It is rare outside Hawaii and will need spelling out.
- The article is part of the name and should not be dropped.
