The story of Katiana
The legend gives Catherine as a learned young noblewoman of Alexandria who out-argued fifty pagan philosophers, converted them, refused the emperor, was sentenced to the wheel, and was beheaded when the wheel broke. She became one of the most popular saints of the later Middle Ages, patron of scholars, wheelwrights and philosophers, and one of the voices Joan of Arc reported hearing. No evidence for her existence earlier than several centuries after the supposed events has ever been produced, and the Church's 1969 revision downgraded her feast accordingly. The wheel survives in the firework and in the rose windows named for it. Katiana peaks in America in 1998.

Aikaterine has no secure etymology; the association with katharos, pure, is a medieval folk derivation that produced the th in Katherine. Katiana joins Katie, a clip of the name, to the -ana ending, and the compound has no documented meaning. The wheel is the saint's attribute, from the legend that a spiked wheel was prepared for her execution and shattered at her touch.
