Where it comes from

The story of Katheryne

The legend of Catherine of Alexandria dates from several centuries after the events it describes and is not historically supported, but its imagery went everywhere. She is condemned to be broken on a spiked wheel; the wheel shatters at her touch; she is beheaded instead. The wheel became her identifying attribute in art, so any woman in a painting standing beside one is Catherine. From there the object entered ordinary language: a spinning firework is a Catherine wheel, a circular window with radiating spokes is a Catherine wheel in architecture, the gymnastic cartwheel took the name in some dialects, and the device appears in coats of arms across Europe. It is a rare case of a saint's torture instrument becoming a piece of common vocabulary, and the name's own meaning, unlike the wheel, has never been established.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Katherine's origin is genuinely unknown. The Greek form Aikaterine has no established etymology; the connection to katharos, pure, is a later reinterpretation rather than a derivation. Katheryne is a nineteenth-century American spelling; its peak is 1891.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Katheryne went to 9 girls in 2025, but Katherine and Catherine are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 2,651, which makes it the 112th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,995 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 606 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Katheryne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
