Where it comes from

The story of Kasie

On 30 April 1900 an engineer named John Luther Jones died at the throttle of the Cannonball outside Vaughan, Mississippi, having stayed aboard to brake his train. His nickname came from Cayce, the Kentucky town he grew up near, and the song written about him by a fellow railroad man spread through vaudeville and became one of the best known American ballads of the century. It carried the name far beyond the small Irish-American population that had it as a surname, and Casey became a first name for boys and then, from the 1970s onward, for girls. Kasie belongs to the later female wave and to the American habit of respelling a name once it is established, using K for the hard C and -ie for the final sound.

Irish O Cathasaigh, from cathasach, vigilant

Casey is the anglicized Irish surname O Cathasaigh, from cathasach, generally read as vigilant or watchful. The famous American bearer got the name from the town of Cayce, Kentucky, by a separate route. Kasie is a modern American respelling; its peak is 1987.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kasie went to 9 girls in 2025, but Kacie and Casie are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 121, which makes it the 839th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,268 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,283 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Kasie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
