Casey came to America as an Irish surname and then a railroad engineer made it a legend. John Luther Jones was called Casey after the Kentucky town he came from, and when he died holding the brake of a train he had slowed enough to save his passengers, the ballad written about him carried his name into every American songbook. The name has been in general use ever since.

Where it comes from

The story of Casie

The ballad of Casey Jones was written by an engine wiper who had known him, and it spread through the vaudeville circuits until the name was as familiar as any in the country. That put an Irish surname into general American use as a first name, and by the second half of the twentieth century it was being given to daughters as well as sons — one of the earlier surname-names to make that crossing. The -ie spelling belongs to that shift: English has used -ie to mark a woman's version of a name for centuries, and Casie is the version of Casey that does it.

Meaning

vigilant, watchful

From the Irish surname Ó Cathasaigh, built on cathasach, meaning vigilant or watchful. The surname is old and widespread in Ireland, and the anglicized spellings — Casey, Cassey, Casie — are all attempts at the same sound by clerks who did not read Irish.

Casie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1983, with 231 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Casie went to 6 girls in 2025, but Kacie and Kasie are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 121, which makes it the 839th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,369 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,283 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Casie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented Irish surname behind it and an American ballad in front of it.
  • Cass works immediately as a short form and suits a child of either sex.
  • Five letters, two syllables, and no possible difficulty of pronunciation.
  • It is recorded for boys as well as girls, though nearly all are girls.
What to consider
  • Casey, Kasey, Kacie and Casie all compete, so the spelling has to be dictated.
  • It belongs to a particular stretch of American naming and dates a woman accordingly.
  • The name reads as unisex on paper, which cuts both ways depending on the room.
