Karmin

Carmine and crimson are the same word, and the word is an insect. Kermes are scale insects harvested from oak trees and crushed for a red dye, and the Arabic qirmiz gave both English words. Until the Spanish brought cochineal from Mexico, every red robe in Europe was made of bugs.

The story of Karmin
Kermes dye was one of the most valuable commodities in medieval Europe. The insects, Kermes vermilio, live on the kermes oak around the Mediterranean, and the females were collected, killed and dried to produce a scarlet that held better than any vegetable dye. Cardinals' robes, royal cloth and the finest woollens all depended on it, and enormous quantities were needed for small amounts of dye. When Spain reached Mexico they found the Aztecs using cochineal, a related insect from prickly pear cactus, which yields far more color per weight, and it became one of the most valuable exports of the colonial period, second only to silver. Spain guarded the source for two centuries and Europeans argued about whether cochineal was an animal, a seed or a berry. The word carmine reached English from the Arabic name for the older dye.

Latin carmen, a song or formula
Karmin is a respelling of Carmen, which is the Spanish form of the Marian title Nuestra Senora del Carmen, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and is not from Latin carmen, a song, despite the frequent claim. Carmel is Hebrew, a garden or orchard. The pigment name carmine is a separate word entirely, from Arabic qirmiz through Latin, and gives crimson as well. It peaks in 1968.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
