The story of Kamaria
The Swahili coast — Mombasa, Zanzibar, Lamu, Kilwa — was one of the great trading zones of the Indian Ocean, and the language that grew there is Bantu in structure with a deep Arabic vocabulary. Qamar, the moon, came in with that vocabulary and Swahili made Kamaria of it. The name is used in Kenya and Tanzania and reached American records chiefly through African-American families choosing Swahili names from the 1970s onward.
