Where it comes from

Our story of Kaidon

The -aiden family is the single largest naming event in recent American history and it is worth stating its shape. Aidan, a real Irish name, entered American use in the 1990s and became a top-twenty boys' name. Its ending then detached and combined with almost every available initial consonant: Braden, Caden, Hayden, Jaden, Kaden, Raiden, Zayden. By the mid-2000s the ending was so productive that names built with it collectively outnumbered any single name in the top ten — which meant the sound was dominant while each spelling looked rare. Kaidon is at the outer edge of that expansion: a respelling of a construction from a detached ending, peaking in 2011, when the family was already past its height.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Aidan is Irish Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, a name connected to a word for fire and to a pre-Christian deity — a settled etymology for Aidan itself. Kaiden is not a form of it; the initial consonant is different, so the word is different. Kaidon is a respelling of Kaiden. No meaning survives the reconstructions.

Kaidon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2011, with 46 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kaidon went to 11 boys in 2025, but Kaydon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 46, which makes it the 882nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,312 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 37,132 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 155,280 for Kaidon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
