Juliette is the French form of a name Shakespeare made unforgettable in English, and French composers kept alive on stage: Berlioz set Roméo et Juliette as a symphony in 1839, and Gounod's opera of 1867 put the French spelling in opera houses everywhere. It runs three syllables to a soft landing on the final T, and it comes with a full drawer of short forms already in use. Familiar in both English and French mouths, without being everywhere.

Where it comes from

The story of Juliette

The name begins with the gens Iulia, one of Rome's old patrician families, which gave Latin the feminine Iulia. French shortened Julia to Julie and then added the affectionate ending -ette, a pattern French uses freely. The English-speaking world met the name mainly through Romeo and Juliet in the 1590s, where Shakespeare used the trimmed English form; the fuller Juliette traveled separately, on its own French footing, and arrived in American records in the late nineteenth century. It has stayed in use ever since, and French cinema has kept the spelling visible in English-speaking countries for decades.

Meaningscholars disagree

from the Roman family name Julius

Juliette is a French diminutive of Julie, from Latin Julia, the feminine of the Roman clan name Iulius. What Iulius itself meant is not settled: the two long-standing readings connect it to Jupiter (Jove), and to a Greek word for soft down, in the sense of youth. Both are old proposals, and neither has won.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Recognized in English and French alike, and currently charting in both France and Canada, so it crosses borders without needing to be respelled.
  • A documented line back to Roman Latin, in continuous use in American records since the nineteenth century.
  • Several short forms already in circulation — Jules, Julie, Etta — so the child has options without anyone inventing one.
  • Widely known through Shakespeare and through French opera and film, which means most people have heard it before, even if they haven't met one.
What to consider
  • Juliet, Juliette and Julietta all exist, and so do Julia and Julie. Expect to spell it often, and expect to correct the occasional Julia.
  • The Romeo and Juliet association arrives with the name for life. For most people it reads as romantic rather than tragic, but it is a story that ends badly, and someone will mention it.
  • It is climbing steadily right now, so a child born this year may meet more Juliettes at school than the current numbers suggest.
  • The final stress means it doesn't blend into a mumble, but it does need the whole three syllables — quick speakers tend to flatten it toward Julie.
