Where each name comes from
Jade
The green gemstone; from Spanish 'piedra de ijada', stone of the flank
Spanish colonists in the Americas named the green stone for the ailment it was used to treat — pains of the side and kidneys. The same idea sits inside the mineral name nephrite, from Greek nephros, kidney.
ilia (Latin, flanks) → ijada (Spanish) → piedra de ijada → jade (French) → Jade
How it traveled
Spanish speakers in sixteenth-century Mexico met a hard green stone that Mesoamerican peoples valued highly and used as a remedy for pains of the flank, and called it piedra de ijada. French borrowed the phrase and reduced it to le jade; English took jade from French in the eighteenth century, first as a mineral term and only much later as a name for a person.
Juliette
from the Roman family name Julius
Juliette is a French diminutive of Julie, from Latin Julia, the feminine of the Roman clan name Iulius. What Iulius itself meant is not settled: the two long-standing readings connect it to Jupiter (Jove), and to a Greek word for soft down, in the sense of youth. Both are old proposals, and neither has won.
Iulia → Julia → Julie → Juliette
How it traveled
The name begins with the gens Iulia, one of Rome's old patrician families, which gave Latin the feminine Iulia. French shortened Julia to Julie and then added the affectionate ending -ette, a pattern French uses freely.

Out loud, and in short
Jade
JAYD
One syllable, rhyming with made. Said the same way in English and in French, which is part of why the spelling has traveled so intact.
- Jadey — The most common affectionate form, used at home and among friends rather than in writing.
- J — Initial-only, informal; common in text messages and among classmates.
- JJ — Informal, and only where a second initial invites it; also stands alone as a nickname for many J names.
- Jay — Informal shortening; also a full given name in its own right, used for men and women.
Juliette
joo-lee-ET
Stress lands on the last syllable in both English and French. The French pronunciation is closer to zhoo-lee-ET, with a soft opening consonant like the s in measure.
- Jules — The most common informal short form in English; also stands alone as a given name, and in French it is a man's name in its own right.
- Julie — Doubles as the parent form of the name and as a nickname; strongly represented among older generations as a full given name.
- Etta — Taken from the ending; used independently as a given name too.
- Juju — Household nickname, mostly used with small children.
- Also Lettie, Jet.

The trade-offs, name by name
Jade
Strengths
- Spelled the way it sounds, and already a familiar English word — very little risk of being asked to repeat or spell it.
- One syllable, so it sits easily beside longer or shorter surnames and needs no shortening to be practical.
- Used unchanged in French, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch, with Giada as the Italian form — it crosses borders without translation.
To consider
- Heard aloud, it can be written down as Jada, Jayde or Jaida. A short correction, but likely a lifelong one.
- In older English, 'jade' also meant a worn-out horse, and from there a disreputable woman — Shakespeare uses it that way. The sense is long dead outside dictionaries, but it exists.
- One syllable leaves little room for nicknames; Jadey and Jay are about the extent of it, which some families prefer and others miss.
Juliette
Strengths
- Recognized in English and French alike, and currently charting in both France and Canada, so it crosses borders without needing to be respelled.
- A documented line back to Roman Latin, in continuous use in American records since the nineteenth century.
- Several short forms already in circulation — Jules, Julie, Etta — so the child has options without anyone inventing one.
To consider
- Juliet, Juliette and Julietta all exist, and so do Julia and Julie. Expect to spell it often, and expect to correct the occasional Julia.
- The Romeo and Juliet association arrives with the name for life. For most people it reads as romantic rather than tragic, but it is a story that ends badly, and someone will mention it.
- It is climbing steadily right now, so a child born this year may meet more Juliettes at school than the current numbers suggest.
