Julieanne joins the two busiest halves in English double-naming. Julie brings a Roman family name that claimed descent from a Trojan prince; Anne brings a Hebrew word for favor and the most-used second element in the language. Together they make a name that is entirely predictable in its parts and entirely specific as a whole.

Where it comes from

The story of Julieanne

Anne became the standard second half of English double names for reasons of sound rather than sense: it is one syllable, it ends open, and it attaches to anything. Mary Anne, Julie Anne, Lee Anne, Rose Anne and dozens more followed, first written as two words, then hyphenated, then closed up into one. The Julie half arrived from French, which had made Julie from the Latin Julia and passed it to English in the eighteenth century. Writing the compound as a single word is the last stage of the process and the most American one — it makes the whole thing a single legal first name rather than a first name and a middle.

Meaningscholars disagree

of the Julii; and favor

Julie descends from the Roman gens name Julius, and the Romans themselves said it came from Iulus, the son of Aeneas, which is a claim of ancestry rather than an etymology — the family wanted a Trojan founder and supplied one. What Iulus meant is not recoverable. Anne is firmer: Hebrew Hannah, favor or grace, one of the few name meanings nobody argues about. A compound like this carries two meanings side by side and merges neither.

JOO-lee-ann, three syllables with the main stress at the front and a secondary one at the end. There is no pause in the middle. Juliana, the older single name, is four syllables and stresses the third — a genuinely different name that this one is regularly confused with.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are entirely familiar, so no part of the name needs explanation.
  • Julie and Annie are both complete names and they sit in different registers.
  • As one word it works as a single given name on any form, which the two-word version does not always.
What to consider
  • Julianne, Julie Anne, Julie-Anne and Juliann all exist and all sound alike, so the spelling has to be given in full.
  • The extra e in the middle is the one letter that separates this from the commonest version, and it is the one that gets dropped.
  • Written double names of this kind place a person in a specific stretch of the last century fairly precisely.
