Jovon
Masculine
Jovon is given to both — 2,727 boys and 289 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Jovon belongs to the -von family, which was one of the most productive in American boys' naming between about 1975 and 1995: Davon, Javon, Jovon, Levon, Devon. The ending has an odd double life — Devon is a genuine English county and Levon an Armenian name — but in most of these it is a free-standing element. Jovon's peak is 1981.

Our story of Jovon
This family shows a naming element being manufactured out of a misreading, which is a more common process than it sounds. Devon entered American naming in the 1960s as a place name and a surname; by the 1970s the ear had reanalysed it as De- plus -von, which is not how the word is built at all — Devon is a single unit from a Celtic tribal name. But once the reanalysis happened, -von was available, and American naming used it: Davon, Javon, Jovon, Trevon, Ravon. Each of those treats as a suffix something that was never a suffix. That is exactly how the Latin -ora, the French -ien and the English -son ended up in the same position, and it is one of the standard ways a language acquires new word-building material. The element is real now, whatever it was before.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No documented meaning for the compound. The -von ending in this family is not traceable to a word; it appears to have detached from Devon, an English county name of Celtic origin, and from Levon, the Armenian form of Leo. The Jo- front may be from Joseph or John, or may carry nothing. A separate coincidence is worth noting: Jovan is a genuine Serbian name meaning John, and Jovon is close enough to be confused with it without descending from it.

The Cy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jovon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cy climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cy's path sketches the road Jovon is walking now.
Jovon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
