Josilyn
Feminine · “of the Gauts”
Josilyn puts an i where the standard spelling has an e, in a syllable nobody actually pronounces. That is not carelessness so much as opportunity: the middle vowel of this name has never been fixed, not in Norman French, not in medieval English records, and not now. The -lyn at the end is a different matter — a general-purpose American ending that attached itself to almost everything.

The story of Josilyn
Medieval scribes spelled this name Goscelin, Joscelin, Josceline and Jocelin without troubling themselves, because the vowel in question was unstressed and therefore unimportant. English only later developed the idea that a name has one correct spelling. When Jocelyn came back into use in the twentieth century, the middle vowel went straight back to being negotiable, and American families supplied e, i, y and a in roughly equal numbers. Meanwhile -lyn had become a standard ending in its own right, available to finish Carolyn, Jacquelyn, Marilyn and Roselyn, and it finished this one too.

of the Gauts
Jocelyn descends from a Norman French form of a Germanic name built on the Gaut people, and that reading competes with an older derivation from Latin iocosus, playful, which sounds better and holds up worse. The -lyn ending has its own separate history, ultimately from a Welsh word for a lake by way of the name Lynn, but it arrives here as a suffix rather than as a word and brings no meaning with it. A name assembled from an inherited front and a borrowed ending owns only half its history.

Pronouncing Josilyn
JOSS-ih-lin
JOSS-ih-lin, three syllables, stress at the front. The middle vowel is so reduced in ordinary speech that this spelling and the standard one are indistinguishable in a sentence — which is exactly why the vowel has been able to wander for a thousand years.

The Korrie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Josilyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Korrie climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Korrie's path sketches the road Josilyn is walking now.

The trade-off
- The i is a genuine historical option rather than a modern invention; medieval records use it.
- Josie and Lyn are both established short forms and neither depends on the spelling of the middle.
- The sound is thoroughly familiar to every English speaker.
- Jocelyn is the spelling that will be written by default, and the i has to be given every time.
- At least six spellings of this name are in current use and none of them dominates, so a correction never becomes unnecessary.
- The -lyn ending is a strong period marker, and it dates the name more firmly than the front does.
