Where it comes from

The story of Joscelyn

The Gauts or Geats were a people of what is now southern Sweden, and they are the tribe Beowulf comes from in the poem. Their name entered the Germanic naming stock as an element, appearing in Gauzlin and its diminutives, and the Normans carried it to England after 1066, where it produced the male names Goscelin and Jocelin and the surnames Joslin, Jocelyn and Gosling. It stayed a man's name in England through the medieval period and beyond; the crossing to female use is a twentieth-century development, and by the 1990s it was almost entirely a girls' name in America. The modern respellings, Joscelyn and Jocelynn, belong to that stage.

Meaning

Germanic Gaut, a member of the Geats

From the Germanic name Gauzlin or Gozelin, a diminutive built on the tribal name Gaut, borne by the Geats. The Normans brought it to England as Goscelin and Jocelin, and it was male until the twentieth century. Joscelyn is a modern spelling; the peak is 2007.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Joscelyn went to 8 girls in 2025, but Jocelyn, Joselyn and Jocelynn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 1,068, which makes it the 294th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,623 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,505 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Joscelyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
