The story of Jocelin
Germanic peoples made personal names out of tribal ones constantly, so a man could be called after a whole nation and nobody thought it odd: Frank, Norman, Saxon and Gaut all did this. Gaut belonged to a people of southern Sweden, remembered in Old English as the Geats and in the place name Gotland. The Franks turned it into Gautelen, the Normans into Goscelin, and it arrived in England in 1066 attached to a good many actual men. It stayed masculine through the Middle Ages, faded, and came back in the twentieth century as a woman's name, which is the usual direction of travel. This spelling, without the y, is the older one.
