Jocelyn
Feminine · “from the Germanic name Gauzelin”
Jocelyn is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 113,061 girls against 351 boys since 1880.
Jocelyn arrived in England with the Normans as a man's name, spent centuries as a surname, and came back in the twentieth century almost entirely as a name for girls. The mouth likes it: two brisk syllables that can stretch to three, ending in that soft -lyn shared with Carolyn and Evelyn. It has the rare quality of sounding both old and unfussy.

Where it comes from
From Gauzelin to Jocelyn
The story of Jocelyn
The name begins in Continental Germanic as Gauzelin or Gozelin, a diminutive built on the tribal name Gaut, and passed through Old French as Josselin and Goscelin. Norman settlers carried it into England after the Conquest, where it was a reasonably common man's name through the medieval centuries and then faded into a stock of surnames — Joslin, Josling, Jocelyn among them. Brittany kept it too: Josselin is a town there, and its castle has stood since the Middle Ages. When the name resurfaced in English-speaking countries, it came back mainly on the girls' side, and that is where American records have kept it ever since.
Meaning
from the Germanic name Gauzelin, 'of the Gaut people'
The root is the tribal name Gaut, the same element behind the Geats of Old Norse and Old English tradition, in an affectionate -lin diminutive. Jocelyn also happens to resemble Latin iocus, 'joke, jest', and the association with joy has followed the name around — but that resemblance is coincidence, not descent.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jocelyn went to 788 girls in 2025, but Joselyn, Jocelynn and Joselin and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 1,068, which makes it the 294th most-given girls’ name of the year — 99 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,505 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 2,040 for Jocelyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- A documented line running back to Norman England and Continental Germanic, so nothing about it will date suddenly.
- Several ready-made short forms — Josie, Joss, Jo — none of which need explaining.
- Recognizable in French as Joceline and Jocelyne, which travels well for families with ties to French-speaking countries.
- Familiar enough that no one asks what it is, uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- The spellings compete: Joslyn, Joscelyn and Jocelyne all exist, and so does the question of whether there is an s or a c in the middle. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often.
- Two syllables or three is genuinely unsettled, so some people will say it differently than you do. Neither version is a mistake, which makes correcting anyone awkward.
- It sits well past its high point in American usage, so a Jocelyn born now will meet more adults than children with the name — a small oddity most kids barely register.
- For roughly nine centuries this was a man's name, and it survives as a surname. That history is invisible in daily American life, but it does surface in older books and records.
