Where it comes from

The story of Jonna

Luke's verse is unusually specific. It names Mary Magdalene, Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and says they and many others provided for the group out of their means. Chuza's position makes Joanna a woman of some standing, attached to the household of Herod Antipas, and the detail is the kind a writer with a source supplies rather than invents. The same three women, or two of them, reappear at the tomb. What the verse establishes is a financial arrangement: an itinerant group with no visible income was supported by women who had their own resources, which in that society usually meant widows or wives of officials. It is one sentence and it is the only account of how any of it was paid for.

Meaning

Hebrew Yochanan, God is gracious

From the Greek Ioanna, the feminine of Ioannes, from Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious. Joanna is named twice in Luke, at 8:3 as one of the women who supported the ministry financially and at 24:10 as one of those who found the empty tomb. Jonna is a Scandinavian and American spelling of the same name. It peaks in the American data in 1963.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jonna went to 11 girls in 2025, but Jonah and Jona are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 56, which makes it the 904th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,956 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 28,701 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Jonna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
