Joetta
Feminine · “may he add another”
Joetta is unusual in what it is built from. Most names of this shape are made by adding an ending to a full name — Georgetta from George, Henrietta from Henry. Joetta is made from a nickname: Joe, the short form of Joseph, given the same Italian ending. That is a small thing and a real one, and it is why the name feels informal even at full length.

The story of Joetta
Joseph was one of the great shared names of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and English use of it never really stopped. Joe followed as the inevitable short form, and by the nineteenth century it was so ordinary in American speech that it was doing duty as a word for an average man. Making a woman's name from Joe rather than from Joseph is a distinctly American move and a distinctly informal one — the same instinct produced Bobbie, Willie and Frankie for daughters. Joetta puts a formal Italian ending on a very plain American syllable, and the mismatch is exactly what gives it its character.
Meaning
may he add another
Hebrew Yosef is a sentence rather than a word: may He add, or He will add — a prayer for another child, spoken over the one already born. Genesis makes the point explicitly when Rachel names her son. The meaning is settled and it is unusually tender for an ancient name. The -etta ending brings nothing of its own; it is a diminutive, and its job here is to mark the name as a woman's rather than to describe anything.

joh-ETT-uh, three syllables with the stress in the middle. The first syllable is the name Joe, unchanged. Some families say JOH-etta, weighting the front, which keeps Joe more audible and is the less common of the two.

The Lorenza test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Joetta's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lorenza climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lorenza's path sketches the road Joetta is walking now.
Joetta sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Jo and Etta are both complete names, and they sit at opposite ends of formality.
- The root is one of the most widely recognized names in the world and needs no explaining anywhere.
- It is spelled the way it sounds, with nothing silent and no letter doing unexpected work.
- The -etta ending places the name in an earlier American century, and it has not come back the way Etta itself has.
- It will be heard as Joetta, Joette or Jodetta and written as all three, because none of them is common enough to be the default.
- The name announces its relation to Joe, which is either a family connection worth keeping or an association to think about.
